the *poing* just sent me this in IM, an article by clay shirky written in 2003. why did i not see this before? it's quite brilliant.

some of us have seen those effects several times over.

Ain't it the truth! We can look at history to see that human beings have few real concerns. :) And that those few concerns will always be present in every conversation. We call it "mature" when we become sufficiently subtle. :)

I do not believe we can design a system of technology (unless we use drugs!), to divert human beings from standing on their soapboxes spewing forth their personal view of the world. Any group that gets sufficiently large is going to collapse eventually. The time it takes depends on the strength of the "leaders."

A good example we are both familiar with is soc.singles. In all social group settings there will be Barbarians at the Gate. And the Barbarians are us. :)
