Family members in Washington state fed their cats outside and eventually gave up on trying to keep the racoons out of the cat dishes.
This led, inexorably, to racoons who stand up on their backlegs holding the food dish and thump it on the window sill while gazing into the house.
'Yo! A little service here!'
The family members have opted to simply continue feeding them. As one of them points out, the racoons are going to be in the neighborhood anyway and at least this way they aren't marauding through the trash bins.
