the "national organization for marriage" usually makes me sick, but today it became -- inadvertantly, of course -- the prime hilarity of my day.

a few weeks ago i heard that they were planning to either change their name, or start a major campaign as "two million for marriage". a title/slogan that acronymizes to "2M4M" -- which sounds like an ad on a kinky gay sex site to us perverts. that's almost right up there with "teabagging".

i thought after this came to their ears, they might change their mind about the name. but no, they went right ahead. what they didn't go right ahead with, however, was the acquisition of the appropriate domains.

enter 2m4m.org.

Silly fish, they're not listening to us!

Honestly, even before the acronym I'm taken by the feebleness of a quest to gather two million Americans to protect an institution that's, what, six thousand years old? I appreciate that they feel persecuted, but this is either ultimate desperation or bad organization skills or embarrassing innumeracy.

All the same, I wish them the best. I hope they do a magnificent job of taking money away from bigoted people and, after pocketing really ludicrous salaries, have enough left over to air their ads profusely. I don't think I could have made a better ad than "A Gathering Storm" to make the case that fears of same-sex marriage are irrational and pathetic. Plus, of course, if there was less homophobia in the world I wouldn't get to see so much of George Takei.

lovely!

The stupid, it makes you laugh. And the .org site is really very nicely done.

But I'm kinda confused (not) by the original wingnut plan: I'm very much in favor of marriage, as long as it's reasonably egalitarian. I think the state, federal and local benefits of civil marriage should be open to life partners regardless of their respective genders. So put me down "for marriage". But somehow I think I wouldn't be welcome in the wingnuts' two million.
