go away.

i don't want to hear that you've been abused by a clergyman when you were a young teenager. i don't even know whether to believe you. i think you've handily grabbed onto the best defense you could find -- blaming your actions on somebody else abusing you when you were a child. because who wouldn't be horrified at that, who wouldn't feel for you? somebody else infected you with teh gay! couldn't have just sprung up on its own, could it. certainly not in a republican. yowza.

i tell you who wouldn't feel for you. this survivor of child sexual abuse. this one who dragged zirself through the initial humiliation of admitting the shame to a counselor. who worked zir ass off to overcome the cycle of abuse and violence. who never laid a hand on another person without their consent, who developed a consent fetish, who to this day makes damn sure any advance, even just a geek-flirty one, is wanted. who is worried about the very first geek-flirty ones because they might impose discomfort on the other person. who wouldn't dream of coming on to a teenager. not because they're "children" -- they're not. not because sex is dirty -- it's not. not because gay sex is an abomination -- it's not. but because i have some bloody self-control and know what is and isn't appropriate.

you bastard. shame, shame, shame on you. even if you were abused. that's no excuse. you have been an adult for years. you should have fought against trying to do the very thing that was (maybe) forced onto you. you should have sought counseling (whether or not you had been abused, when you felt the first stirrings of making out with 16-year old boys over whom you had power). but no; you had to screw around with them instead. you had to abuse your position of power to make advances on people barely old enough to handle themselves in normal sexual situations for that age. they did well, you know? they did the right thing. they tried to disengage, and when that didn't work, they told somebody. you're a miserable little shit who couldn't admit to his homosexual desires, and go about them like an adult man. and don't you now dare to try and defend it by blaming some other guy. oh yeah, and the booze. always so handy; a safe all-american excuse on which to blame one's failings.

how about you blame them on your weak character instead, you slimy chickenhawk?

i don't want to hear any more about you. go away. and take that arsehole hastert with you. you're all such small, rotten men.

Thank you, that was some rant, and I agree with every damn word.

Neither alcoholism nor abuse (presuming either is actually relevant) excuses the man from the consequences of his actions, and if he tries to weasel out of anything... I can't even think.

Have you read http://www.waynemadsenreport.com ? Apparently it wasn't just Hastert who knew about it.

Well, Fox News apparently was identifying Foley as a Democrat, so maybe claiming Clinton mind control is the next step..

This weeks news is infuriating me.

Hey, Mel Gibson blamed it all on the alcohol; Foley's just falling in right behind.

spin spin spin

But oh, how much worse it was when Bill Clinton had sex with Monica Lewinsky.

yeah, consensual sex with a person who was of age at the time; clearly that's worse.

though frankly, the power imbalance of that didn't fill me with wholehearted "you go, peckerhead" either. and how he behaved when it came out, that just made me dislike him fervently. "i did not have sex with that woman". clinton's just another mealymouthed arsehole, if you ask me. is this just par for the course in people who rise to that level of power through this particular system? no, i guess not -- carter remains my shining light in all of this miasma.

the hypocrisy of the self-righteous republicans with similkar or worse skeletons in their closets attacking him for it, that's on a whole 'nother level of sleaze.

I am *so* with you on this. My anger runs deep in how this was handled, how it happened in the first place, and how the scrambling to cover the truth continues.

Foley, take responsibility for your actions and face the consequences. Most of us do that every day of our lives.

and while I am at it: How convenient this has come to light to overshadow the loss of legal protections. The one who has yet to make a good choice is going to decide who is a terrorist and who can be tortured?!

Any willingness I have to respect Republicans as an American tribe, is going to depend on how they handle this mess. The fact that someone knew about it for _a year_ and didn't move on it is not a good start. I expect better of _any_ leadership.

Well said.

About this:
this survivor of child sexual abuse. this one who dragged zirself through the initial humiliation of admitting the shame to a counselor. who worked zir ass off to overcome the cycle of abuse and violence.

I don't recall knowing this about you before. It adds to my already considerable respect for you.

I'm only hoping, really hoping that the laws/sentencing he made more stringent will bite him, and bite him with a vengeance he'll never forget. AND I hope his actions start making Republicans think very hard about who's in their party and why.

I'm afraid your second point is coming true. If the few minutes of NPR that I heard earlier are any indication, ultraconservatives are saying that this is what comes from having gays in the GOP. *spit*

As for the first point, I haven't been paying really close attention to the news but did this creep have any inappropriate physical contact with these kids, or is it "just" about totally revulsive communications with subordinates who are also minors? I'm just not wild about the prospect of a lifetime of jail and asylums for someone just on the basis of profane words.

i think the jury is still out on whether he had any actual contact -- from what i've seen there seems to be some evidence in messages that he had met with one boy, but whether anything untoward happened, nobody knows as yet. (i am not following this closely; it wears me out too much.)

yeah, i am not too keen on years in jail for sexy talk either, but i do want him to get slapped mightily for the abuse of power.

Well, it depends. If he was responsible for, or even *voted* for the laws that send someone to prison for "sexy talk", then I think it's only appropriate that he feel the full weight of those laws.

FWIW, I just took a look around a few bits of the right wing blogosphere, and the spin it's now getting is that "other people" (not Republicans or allies) knew about this for a year and were sitting on it for an "October surprise". Have to poke around a bit further, but it's rather depressing all round. 1) The immediate finger waving at "the other" and 2) failure to acknowledge that Folley buddy-boy laid himself wide open for this by his actions.

The labelling of him as a Democrat on Fox News was a bit disengenous too.
Back to Habeas Corpus going "poof" in the States.....

i don't read little green footballs as a matter of principle; they are too vile for me.

it's not surprising that they'll do anything but ask that foley take responsibility, of course. taking responsibility isn't fashionable anymore with the republican party and its apologists.
