in his january "state of the state" speech arnold schwarzenegger said:

I know the special interests will oppose all the reforms I have mentioned. Any time you try to remove one dollar from the budget, there are five special interests tugging on the other end. Anytime you try to make something more efficient, there are a half-dozen special interests trying to prevent it.

The result is that nothing changes in Sacramento. This place is in the grip of the special interests.

The people of California demand reform. That is what the recall election was all about. That is what the ballot process is about. And that is what this special session is about.

A special session will allow us to work together quickly, so that people can vote on our reforms in an election by early summer.

If we here in this chamber don't work together to reform the government, the people will rise up and reform it themselves.
[emphasis mine.]

well... not so much, eh? instead the people have bonked you over the head.

california voters decided "no" on all of the governator's propositions. guess what, arnold? maybe they actually want you to, like, work with the other elected politicians to figure out solutions, as you did during the period immediately after your election, resulting in your job approval rating reaching into the stratosphere? maybe instead of losing sight of your election promises of bipartisanship by becoming more and more a tool of the republican party, you're pissing away all your initial political capital?

Cross-National Correlations of Quantifiable Societal Health with Popular Religiosity and Secularism in the Prosperous Democracies, a research paper by gregory paul in the journal of religion and society.

some of the results:

  • the US is the only prosperous democracy that retains high homicide rates
  • there is a positive correlation between pro-theistic factors and juvenile mortality
  • rates of adolescent gonorrhea infection remain six to three hundred times higher in the US than in less theistic developed democracies
  • the US also suffers from uniquely high adolescent and adult syphilis infection rates
  • increasing adolescent abortion rates show positive correlation with increasing belief and worship of a creator; again rates are uniquely high in the US
  • early adolescent pregnancy and birth rates are several times higher in the US
  • age of first intercourse, number of sexual partners and similar issues among teens do not exhibit wide disparity or a consistent pattern among the prosperous democracies sampled

interesting. this is just a first glance impression; i'll have to to reread it a lot more carefully.
